Detroit Pistons land Allen IversonSubmitted by admin on Tue, 2008-11-04 21:32.
The Detroit Pistons have landed the first major trade of the NBA season, acquiring superstar Allen Iverson from the Denver Nuggets in exchange for "Big Shot" Chauncey Billups, Antonio McDyess and Cheikh Samb. The move makes sense for the Pistons for a number of reasons, not least of which is Iverson's unmatchable basketball skills. He is one of the most explosive stars in the game and is able to make baskets like few in NBA history have ever been able to do. While Billup's D, leadership and three-point shooting will be missed, Iverson gives the Pistons a star like they haven't had in quite some time. He will also help reinvigorate interest in the team, that was somewhat lacking of late, and will help sell more Pistons tickets. Iverson will make his home debut on Sunday against the defending-champion Boston Celtics. Buy Celtics Pistons tickets. It will be a great game to be at, so if you can make, definitely look into it. You can be sure that the Palace at Auburn Hills will be electric that night, so you definitely don't want to miss it. President of Basketball Operations Joe Dumars had been disappointed with the Pistons early exit from the Finals in recent years, and after firing head coach Flip Saunders in the off-season, he has succeeded in at least shaking things up in the Motor City. "I like acquiring guys who come in and it's kind of on the table that they're coming in with something to prove," Dumars said. "You know he wants to win. This is going to present what we feel like is his best opportunity to do so. It's a different way for us to try to win games, other than the same predictable way we've been doing it for quite some time," Dumars said. The trade also makes sense from a dollars and cents standpoint. Iverson will be a free agent at the end of the season, so that will give Dumars plenty of room to maneuver during the off-season. "I'll miss my teammates, the fans and everyone in the Pistons organization who I grew close to over the last six years," said Billups. "We had a great run." The fact that second-year point guard Rodney Stuckey looks read to become a great NBA player should also help Detroit deal with the loss of Billups.
